Understanding the Form

Form 1098-T is an annual tax statement used by eligible educational institutions to report qualified tuition and related educational expenses, scholarships, and grants for the previous tax year. The form may assist taxpayers in determining eligibility for certain federal education tax benefits.

The University is required by the IRS to issue Form 1098-T for students with reportable transactions during the applicable tax year, regardless of whether the student ultimately qualifies for a tax credit.

A student may not receive a 1098-T for several reasons, including:
  • No qualified tuition or related expenses were paid during the calendar year
  • Qualified charges were fully covered by scholarships, grants, or waivers
  • Enrollment activity was reported in a prior calendar year
  • The University did not have a valid mailing address on file

Eligibility for Form 1098-T reporting may vary depending on tax residency status, documentation provided to the University, and applicable IRS reporting requirements.

Tax Credits

No. Receipt of Form 1098-T does not automatically qualify a taxpayer for an education related tax credit or deduction. Eligibility is determined by IRS regulations and individual tax circumstances.

North Carolina A&T State University cannot determine whether a student qualifies for an education related tax credit or deduction. Students and families should consult a qualified tax professional or review IRS Publication 970 for additional guidance.

Accessing the Form

Current students may obtain electronic copies of their 1098-T through the TouchNet Online Student Payment System. Former students may access prior year forms through Heartland ECSI.

Please refer to the Electronic 1098-T Access instructions above for detailed steps.

Yes. Students may grant Authorized Users access to view and print 1098-T forms through the TouchNet Online Student Payment System.

Students who consented to electronic delivery through the Online Student Payment System will not receive a paper copy by mail. Students should also verify that their mailing address is current within Aggie Access.

Understanding the Numbers

Form 1098-T reports payments received toward qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year, which may differ from semester billing statements, financial aid timing, refunds, or other student account activity.

Beginning with tax year 2018, the University reports payments received toward qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) during the calendar year rather than billed charges. As a result, amounts appearing on the 1098-T may differ from student account activity displayed in Aggie Access.

Qualified tuition and related expenses generally include:
  • Tuition
  • Required fees
  • Certain mandatory academic charges
Students should consult IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional regarding eligible educational expenses.

Generally, housing charges, meal plans, parking permits, insurance, and other nonqualified expenses are not included as qualified tuition and related expenses for IRS reporting purposes.

Corrections

Students who believe identifying information reported on Form 1098-T is incorrect should contact the Treasurer’s Office for assistance.

Students should promptly update personal information through the appropriate University processes to avoid delays or inaccuracies in tax reporting documents.

Federal regulations require educational institutions to request a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN) for tax reporting purposes. Students who have not provided this information may be contacted by the University and should update their records promptly to avoid reporting issues.

Reporting

Yes. Federal regulations require eligible educational institutions to submit Form 1098-T information directly to the IRS.
