Background Check Screening

North Carolina A&T University is dedicated to fostering a safe and secure atmosphere for all members of its community, including students, faculty, staff, affiliates, visitors, and other stakeholders, while also safeguarding its resources and assets. In line with this commitment, making informed decisions regarding appointments plays a crucial role. All permanent and temporary employees as well as university volunteers are required to have successfully passed appropriate background screenings when seeking employment, placement or volunteer opportunity at the University.

Background Checks will only be used to evaluate candidates for employment or volunteer purposes and will not be used to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, ethnicity, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, disability, age (over 40), veteran’s status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, genetic information or other prohibited ground.

Background checks regarding employment are handled by Talent Solutions and HR for Academic Affairs teams as part of the hiring process. Background checks needed for affiliates or volunteers can be requested by contacting the Talent Solutions team and providing their names and email addresses.

The background check process will encompass some or all of the following components based on the specific position that the candidate will hold with the University:

  1. Residency history and Social Security trace, including a search in the Social Security Administration Death Master File.
  2. Criminal convictions check for all municipal and state jurisdictions where the individual has resided or worked within the past seven (7) years.
  3. Examination of federal court records for any criminal convictions.
  4. National sex-offender registry check.
  5. Education credential verification.
  6. Professional license verification for individuals whose positions require a professional license, if applicable.
  7. Verification of driver's license records with relevant state motor-vehicle licensing agencies for individuals whose duties involve driving, if applicable.
  8. Credit history for candidates with access to monies or those positions identified in the University Background Check Policy.

The only background check vendor that is approved for the University is HireRight.
