Sprintax Calculus

Overview

Sprintax Calculus is a specialized and secure cloud-based software that the university uses to collect the immigration information of non-resident, international students, faculty, and staff who receive payments from the university. The system ensures that all university payments to Nonresident Aliens (NRAs) comply with applicable federal tax regulations.

The information collected in Sprintax Calculus includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Residency status
  • Personal data
  • Contact details
  • Type of income expected to be received from the university
  • History of prior visits to the United States, type of visa used, and length of stay
Based on the data collected from the NRA, the system will:
  • Determine the NRA’s tax residency status
  • Determine how the university treats all payments made to the NRA
  • Determine tax treaty eligibility of the NRA
  • Pre-fill IRS tax forms W-8BEN, 8233, W-4, etc
  • Prepare residency and tax summary reports
Please ensure that all applicable electronic forms are signed and completed. Additionally, the University Accounting Office is not in a position to provide individualized tax advice to students.

Benefits

This platform offers numerous advantages, including:
  • Electronic 1042-S Delivery: Enables the university to deliver electronic 1042-S forms to recipients. This reduces the delays associated with mailing and lost forms.
  • E-Signature Capability: Allows students and scholars to sign treaty forms electronically.
  • Document Submission: Facilitates the submission of required documents by nonresident aliens.
  • Integrated Tax Preparation: Imports individual tax documents from Sprintax Calculus into Sprintax Returns for income tax preparation and filing.
  • Support Services: Provides access to live chat support for assistance while using the software.

For Students

  • New international students will receive an email inviting them to complete their Sprintax profile.
  • After you respond to questions regarding electronic consent, your current immigration status, your history of presence in the U.S., and securely upload your immigration-related documents, Sprintax Calculus will generate the appropriate tax forms for your electronic signature.
  • Students must update their Sprintax profile to reflect any change in status and at the start of every new calendar year to ensure their information remains accurate.
  • The University will cover the cost for 100 eligible international students to use Sprintax Returns to file their income taxes after the release of the 1042-S forms.
