ITS Student Tenant Migration

In an effort to streamline the university’s Microsoft 365 setup, ITS is updating access to Microsoft 365 for students. During this process, eligible students who have accounts on the university’s free Microsoft tenant will be migrated to the university’s licensed tenant. This update is part of a larger initiative to implement the latest security measures and best practices for our Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Students whose accounts will be impacted during the free tenant migration will receive email notifications providing further direction to ensure a smooth transition of their account and data.

In addition to the migration, ITS will be retiring accounts of former students who are no longer eligible for Google Workspace. These users will be contacted via email and provided guidance on transferring their data.

For questions regarding the migration of free Microsoft tenant accounts or the Google Workspace accounts that will be retired, contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@ncat.edu or (336) 334-7195, or submit a ticket at https://aggiehelp.ncat.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. The population of users on the free tenant created their accounts manually and are not currently using OneID credentials for access.

Free tenant users who are current students or who graduated within the past year will be migrated to the licensed tenant. Students who are currently using OneID credentials to access Microsoft 365 are already in the licensed tenant and will not need to be included in the migration.

Students whose accounts will be migrated will be contacted via email and notified prior to the start of their account’s migration. Those students who are currently using OneID credentials to access Microsoft 365 will not need to be included in the migration and will receive no further communication.

If you are an eligible user, you should expect the following during the migration:

  • Your Microsoft 365 account (using @aggies.ncat.edu) and any data under the account will be migrated from the free tenant to the licensed tenant.
  • If you are using the free Microsoft tenant to access Microsoft Office, you will need to log into each application again using your OneID credentials after the migration.
  • During the brief migration, your account will be temporarily unavailable to ensure that all data in your account is successfully migrated.
  • After the migration, you will log into your account using your OneID credentials

Users who are not current students or who did not graduate within the past year are ineligible and their accounts will not be migrated.

If you are considered ineligible because you are not a current student or you did not graduate within the past year, your free Microsoft tenant account will not be migrated. We recommend that you take the following actions:

  • Download any documents and data that you desire to preserve by August 14, 2024. After August 14, 2024, you will no longer have access to the account or the data.
  • If you have files that were shared with you by others, you will need to have those files shared with you again since you will no longer have access to the files under the account after August 14, 2024

All students should visit www.office.com to access Microsoft 365 and log in using your OneID credentials. If your account was migrated, you will need to log into each application again using your OneID credentials.

Former students are no longer eligible for Google Workspace and their accounts will be retired. Former students will be contacted via email and given time to transfer their data.
