Passport to Canvas (Student Training)
New to Canvas?   Passport to Canvas  is a self-paced training course designed to help you get started with confidence. Learn the basics of navigating Canvas, submitting assignments, participating in discussions, communicating with your instructors, and using the tools you'll need for success. You can access  Passport to Canvas  from the  Courses  menu in Canvas or self-enroll.

Ally is a tool within Canvas that helps make course materials more accessible and flexible for all learners. Students can use Ally to download course files in formats that best fit their learning preferences, making it easier to study, review, and engage with content anytime, anywhere. 

Alternative Formats Available in Canvas 

Ally provides several downloadable formats to support different learning needs: 

  • Tagged PDF– A structured and more accessible version of a PDF that works well with screen readers.  
  • HTML– Opens content in a web page format that is easy to read on any device and allows for responsive viewing.  
  • ePub– Ideal for mobile reading and compatible with eBook apps, allowing for adjustable text size and offline access.  
  • Audio (MP3)– Converts written content into audio so you can listen on the go.  
  • Electronic Braille– Supports refreshable Braille displays for students who are blind or visually impaired.  
  • BeeLineReader – Enhances readability by adding color gradients to text, helping guide your eyes while reading.  
  • Immersive Reader– Offers features like text-to-speech, translation, and focus tools to improve comprehension.  

 Using Ally’s alternative formats allows you to personalize how you interact with course materials, helping you learn in a way that works best for you. 

Ally for Students

Microsoft Copilot is a chat-based AIpowered assistant built into tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (with the most updated versions) that helps you work smarter, not harder.  

Think of Copilot as a digital study partner that helps you organize your ideas, understand information faster, and get a strong starting point for your work. Whether you’re tackling a research paper, reviewing lecture notes, or preparing for a group project, Copilot can save you time and help you stay focused.  

Copilot includes: 

  1. Chat with text, voice, and image capabilities based on GPT-5 and DALL-E 
  2. Summarization of documents and web pages
  3. Image creation
  4. Web grounding(use of web search to provide additional information to respond to your prompt) 
  5. Commercial data protection(When accessed using your NCAT credentials) 


Copilot Access
 

  • Access Copilot: cloud.microsoft or via the M365 app that can be downloaded to your computer from the app store
  • Log in using OneID credentials ensure you have the school enterprise data protection


Copilot Resources
 

GoReact is an interactive video assessment tool integrated into Canvas that allows you to record, upload, and receive feedback on video-based assignments. You can watch your recordings, review time-stamped instructor comments, and reflect on your performance to improve your skills. GoReact is commonly used for presentations, teaching demonstrations, and skill-based assessments, helping you learn through practice and targeted feedback.

LinkedIn Learning provides free, on-demand access to thousands of expert-led video courses that help you build academic, technical, and professional skills. Explore topics such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, data analysis, programming, leadership, communication, and more to support your coursework and career goals.

LinkedIn Learning Access

Microsoft Office 365 is a free productivity suite available to all NC A&T students. These tools support coursework, collaboration, and communication across all disciplines.  

Students have access to: 

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • OneDrive cloud storage
  • Microsoft Teams

These tools are commonly used for assignments, presentations, group projects, and class communication. 

Microsoft 365 Access

Panopto is university’s video hosting platform designed to make creating and sharing video content easier. It serves as a personal media hub where users can record videos, upload presentations, submit video assignments and share content securely.

Panopto can be accessed using a direct link (https://ncat.hosted.panopto.com) and via Canvas using OneID credentials.

Qualtrics is NC A&T's online survey platform for creating, distributing, and analyzing surveys. Students can use Qualtrics to collect feedback, conduct research, complete class projects, and gather data for academic work.

Student FAQs



How do I access Canvas?
Students can access Canvas by visiting https://ncat.instructure.com and logging in with their OneID credentials.

What courses will I see in Canvas?
Students will see Fall 2026 courses and forward in Canvas. Fall 2026 courses will be available on the first day of class.

Courses offered prior to Fall 2026 will only be available in Blackboard. Students who have incompletes that need to be resolved should contact their instructors who will then request student access to the courses in Blackboard.

I don’t see one of my courses in Canvas. What should I do?
Courses will be made available in the learning management system on the first day of class. If a course is missing:  

  • Confirm that you are officially registered for the course in Aggie Access Online . Updates made in Aggie Access Online will appear in Canvas within 3 to 4 hours.
  • Check that your course has been published in Canvas (if the course is not available on the first day of classes).

What devices and browsers work best with Canvas?
Canvas can be used on desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. For the best performance, students should:  

  • Use an updated browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended)
  • Keep their devices up to date
  • Maintain a stable internet connection

Canvas also offers a  Canvas Student mobile app  for accessing course content, announcements, and grades on the go.    

With the transition to Canvas, what happens to my previous courses and grades in Blackboard?
Your final grades will continue to be stored in the university’s official records system (Aggie Access Online). Previous Blackboard course access will remain closed to students.

Will Blackboard go away completely?
Course delivery in Blackboard will conclude with the Summer II 2026 term. However, Blackboard will be available to instructors, staff, and administrators until June 30, 2027. During this time, data and course packages may be downloaded and stored as needed.
