CELEBRATING OUR VERY OWN

Asia Smith Awarded the 2025 Janet B. Royster Memorial Staff Scholarship

Asia Smith is the Aggie Service Desk Manager with Client Technology Services/Information Technology Services, located in Bluford Library. Asia is also a Staff Senator and serves on both the Communications Committee and Technology Committee.

What is your degree program and expected completion date? I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied Science and Technology with a concentration in Information Technology and a focus on cybersecurity at North Carolina A&T State University. My expected completion date is Spring 2027.

Why did you choose your program? I chose this program because I wanted to expand my impact in the field of cybersecurity, especially within higher education. In my role as Manager of the ITS Service Desk and Student Technology Program, I’ve seen how essential secure and well-supported IT systems are to student and institutional success. This program equips me with the tools to design and implement real-world solutions that improve service delivery and security on our campus and beyond.

I’d also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Edward B. Fort, former Chancellor of North Carolina A&T. I had the honor of supporting him with technology over the years, and his consistent encouragement—from the moment I considered the idea, through acceptance and into the beginning of my Ph.D. journey—meant the world to me. He reminded me that time will pass regardless, so I might as well do something meaningful with it. His belief in my potential was a driving force in my decision to begin this path.

Staff Senate encourages all eligible professional staff to explore this opportunity to support ongoing professional development. For more information about the Janet B. Royster (JBR) Memorial Scholarship, please visit https://myapps.northcarolina.edu/staffassembly/awardsscholarships/janet-b-royster-scholarship/
