Letter from the Chancellor

The University of North Carolina is committed to providing a quality work environment for its faculty and staff so that all employees of the University can be successful in the work they accomplish for the State of North Carolina. As a constituent campus of the UNC System and as an institution that cares deeply about our employees, North Carolina A&T shares this commitment.

Toward this goal, the UNC System will launch the second iteration of its system-wide employee engagement survey from February 4th through February 18th. The baseline survey was conducted in 2018 and will be repeated every two years to create a longitudinal view of faculty and staff engagement throughout the UNC System. This is a significant endeavor and deserves N.C. A&T’s full support.

The topline data from 2018 for both the UNC System and individual institutions were shared with the UNC Board of Governors and posted publicly on the System’s website; used as a comparator for human resource metrics such as turnover data; and supported key policy changes, including the introduction of paid parental leave. At A&T, our survey results served as a predicate for a long list of meaningful changes in units around the university, including enhanced training for supervisors and law enforcement personnel, better on-boarding procedures for new employees, new awards programs to recognize exemplary service and more.

As in 2018, the survey will be conducted by ModernThink LLC, an independent research and consulting firm that specializes in higher education climate assessment. On Feb. 4, the online survey will be distributed to our full-time faculty and staff. You will receive an email invitation directly from ModernThink with details about the survey and how to participate. You will receive a unique login and password that only you can use to participate in the survey, and you will be able to access the survey wherever a computer is available, even at home, on a PC, tablet or phone. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete, and you may complete it on work time or off work time.

Survey participation is voluntary and completely confidential. Only ModernThink will have access to individual employee responses so that our institution cannot trace results back to individuals. You may contact ModernThink at 888.684.4658 or at surveys@modernthink.net to address any concerns.

This is a valuable opportunity to make your voice heard. A high response rate helps to ensure an accurate representation of our community, so please also encourage your colleagues to complete the survey. We would like to see 100 percent participation, or as close to that as we possibly can get.

Over the summer, we will receive and share reports that summarize the data provided so that we can recognize our successes and begin to address concerns that most directly affect and influence our workplace culture. The data we receive through this program will provide us with valuable, useful, and actionable information to enhance the University’s work environment for our faculty and staff and to achieve our goal of recruiting, retaining, and developing the most talented and diverse workforce possible. I encourage each of you to participate in the survey and take this opportunity to share your honest feedback.
