1098T FAQ
What is Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement)?
- The 1098-T form is an annual statement used by eligible educational institutions to report to the IRS amounts pertaining to qualified tuition and related expenses as well as scholarships and grants for each student during the previous calendar year.
- The form is an information tax document to aid taxpayers in determining whether they are eligible to claim a federal income tax deduction or education credit (such as the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Credit) under the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA97).
- While the 1098-T form provides a good starting point, the 1098-T, designed and regulated by the IRS, may not contain all the information needed to claim a tax credit. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to determine eligibility for any tax credits. If you need assistance with this process, please contact a tax professional or refer to official IRS policies for detailed information about the 1098T forms.

Why did I receive Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement)?
This form is being sent to each enrolled student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the tax year, regardless of whether they are eligible for a tax credit. North Carolina A&T State University is required to issue a Form 1098-T by the IRS.
Was a copy of the 1098-T form sent to the IRS?
Yes. Section 6050S of the Internal Revenue Code, as enacted by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, requires institutions to file information returns to assist taxpayers and the IRS in determining eligibility for the Hope and Lifetime Learning education tax credits.
Why was I excluded from receiving a Form 1098-T?
There are several reasons why a student may not receive a 1098-T:
- Although the student attended North Carolina A&T State University in 2018, he/she may have enrolled and been billed in 2017. Therefore, Spring 2018 charges may have been included on the 2017 1098-T in Box 2. If box 7 was checked on the 2017 1098-T form, tuition and fees for Spring 2018 were included on the 2017 1098-T form.
- The student did not have any payments for qualified educational expenses within the tax year; therefore, a 1098-T form was not generated.
- The student’s qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants.
- The student did not have an active address.
What if the information reported on Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement) is incorrect?
If you find that the social security number (SSN) or tax identification number (ITIN) reported on Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement) is incorrect, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at (336) 334-7721.
Why is the amount on my 1098-T different from the amounts listed in Aggie Access?
Beginning with tax year 2018, we will report in Box 1 the amount of payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) for the calendar year. Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses include the following:
- Tuition
- Required Fees
- Athletics Fees
Will I qualify for a tax credit?
North Carolina A&T State University is not in the position to be able to provide you with tax advice or assistance in determining whether you are eligible to claim a credit or the amount of the credit. For assistance in the preparation of your income tax return, please contact a tax professional or refer to IRS Publication 970 (Tax Benefits for Higher Education).
